3 Days Masai Mara Safari

From the sweeping plains of the Rift Valley to the lion-rich grasslands of the Mara — three unforgettable days in Kenya's greatest wildlife reserve.

Experience the Masai Mara in Three Days

The Masai Mara National Reserve is widely regarded as Africa's finest wildlife destination — a vast, unbounded savannah that stretches across 1,510 square kilometres of south-western Kenya, forming the northern extension of the Serengeti ecosystem. Our 3 Days Masai Mara Safari is the ideal introduction to Kenya's most celebrated wilderness: compact enough for short-break travellers, yet packed with the game-viewing encounters that define the East African safari experience.

Departing Nairobi early on Day 1, you'll travel through the spectacular Great Rift Valley — Kenya's defining geological landmark — before descending into the Mara triangle in time for an afternoon game drive. From your very first hours in the reserve, you'll understand why wildlife guides and photographers from around the world return season after season: the density and diversity of wildlife here is simply extraordinary. Lions lounge beneath acacia trees, leopards drape themselves across branches in the dappled midday light, and vast herds of elephant move silently across the golden plains.

Day 2 is dedicated entirely to exploring the Masai Mara at its own pace. Your morning begins before sunrise, when the air is cool and the predators are most active. Your professional driver-guide will use his intimate knowledge of the reserve to track lions, cheetahs, and the elusive leopard, while also seeking out the Big Five — lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhinoceros. After a midday rest back at camp, a late afternoon drive takes you deeper into the reserve as the light turns liquid gold, culminating in a memorable sundowner at a scenic overlook on the Mara River.

On the morning of Day 3 you'll enjoy one final game drive — often the most productive, as predators make their dawn hunts before the heat of the day. After a full camp breakfast, you'll begin the scenic drive back to Nairobi, arriving by early evening. This safari is operated in a customised 4x4 pop-up roof safari minivan, accommodates groups of two to ten guests, and is available year-round. The Masai Mara is exceptional in all seasons: lush and green with newborn animals in the early months, and alive with the iconic Great Wildebeest Migration from July through October.

Your 3-Day Masai Mara Journey

Day 01
Nairobi to Masai Mara

Your safari begins with an early morning pickup from your Nairobi hotel or Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), typically between 6:30 and 7:00 AM. You'll depart the city westwards on the A104 highway, climbing through the Kikuyu escarpment before the road suddenly drops into the spectacular Great Rift Valley — one of Kenya's most breathtaking viewpoints. A brief stop at the escarpment overlook allows you to photograph the sweeping valley floor and the distant silhouette of Mount Longonot.

Continuing through the towns of Naivasha and Narok — the gateway to the Mara — you'll arrive at the reserve boundary in the early afternoon. After a brief lunch break, you'll check in to your tented camp or lodge before setting out for your first afternoon game drive. The Mara is alive in the late afternoon light: watch for lion prides resting in the shade, grazing elephant herds at the waterholes, and the unmistakable silhouettes of giraffe against the amber sky. Return to camp as dusk settles for dinner and an overnight stay.

Day 02
Full Day in the Masai Mara

Rise before the sun for the most rewarding game-viewing experience the Mara has to offer. Your guide will wake you around 5:45 AM for a packed pre-dawn breakfast, before heading out into the reserve as the first light streaks the horizon. The morning hours are when the Masai Mara is at its most theatrical: lions return from night hunts, cheetahs emerge onto open termite mounds to scan for prey, and hyena clans shuffle back to their dens. This is also the best time to find leopards before they retreat to the shade.

Your guide will navigate the reserve's network of tracks, heading towards known wildlife hotspots based on radio contact with other guides — a cooperative approach that maximises your chances of rare sightings. After a full morning drive, you'll return to camp around midday for a hot lunch and a brief rest during the warmest part of the day.

By 3:30 PM you'll be back in the vehicle for the afternoon game drive, which often rivals the morning for drama. As the temperature drops, predators become active again and the golden-hour light is spectacular for photography. Your guide will time the drive to reach a scenic vantage point above the Mara River for a sunset sundowner — a classic East African ritual of cold drinks and good conversation as the sky turns purple and orange above the plains. Return to camp for dinner under the stars.

Day 03
Masai Mara to Nairobi

Your final morning begins once again before sunrise. This third morning game drive is often a guest favourite — perhaps because, knowing it is the last, you watch everything with particular intensity. The reserve is usually fresh with activity: lions finishing the night's hunt, elephant families moving to the river, and the air filled with birdsong as the sun rises over the Oloololo Escarpment.

After approximately two hours in the reserve, you'll return to camp for a full cooked breakfast. Check-out formalities completed, you'll begin the return drive to Nairobi at around 10:00 AM, retracing the scenic route through the Rift Valley. Your guide will make a comfort stop in Narok, and the journey back typically takes between five and six hours, placing you in Nairobi by late afternoon or early evening. Drop-offs are made at your Nairobi hotel or at JKIA, whichever suits your onward travel plans.

The Masai Mara is excellent year-round. The dry season (July–October) coincides with the Great Wildebeest Migration — a truly spectacular spectacle — and offers the best game viewing conditions as animals concentrate near water. The shoulder seasons (January–March and November–December) provide lush scenery, newborn animals, and fewer tourist vehicles. We operate this safari every month of the year.
The standard package includes 2 nights at a comfortable budget tented camp or lodge within or adjacent to the Masai Mara, with private en-suite facilities, hot water, and electricity. Upgrades to mid-range or luxury camps are available — contact us for a tailored quote if you'd like a specific property.
Yes. A Masai Mara balloon safari is an extraordinary add-on, offering a bird's-eye view of the reserve at dawn with a champagne breakfast upon landing.
